Overview

Recognizable by its semicircular, fan-shaped cap that bears dark brown scales on a lighter background. The underside contains small pores rather than gills, where it releases its spores. This mushroom is found on dead logs or living trees, where it can act as a decomposer or a parasite. While edible, only the younger specimens are recommended for consumption as the older ones can be quite tough and have a strong flavor. The smell of a fresh specimen is often compared to watermelon rind. As always, proper identification is crucial as there are many species of Polypores, and not all of them are edible.
