Original Instagram postMossy maple polypore

From the latest record: 2024-02-24.
Features a smooth, white to cream underside where the spores are produced, unique among polypores for being soft and leathery rather than hard or woody.
5-15 cm in diameter. Flat to slightly convex, soft, and typically pale to medium orange or salmon pink, with a velvety to slightly fuzzy texture.
Attached directly to the wood substrate, often appearing as a lateral extension with no distinct stipe.
Absent or rudimentary, not distinct from the cap.
Spore pring is white.
Saprobic, growing exclusively on dead or dying wood of mapple trees (Acer spp.).
Inedible due to its tough and leathery texture.
Typically 5-15 cm across and 1-3 cm thick.
Spores are cylindrical to allantoid, smooth, 3-5 x 1-1.5 µm.
Mild or not distinctive.
Notable for its association with mapple trees and its unique soft, leathery texture that sets it apart from many other polypores.
