Original Instagram postbrown rust of wheat

From the latest record: 2025-09-07.
Rheemata of rust pustules on host leaves (uredinia, telia) with sori breaking through the epidermis; internal hyphae intercellular, forming haustoria in host tissues
No cap; symptoms appear as yellowish to brown spots or pustules (rust sori) on leaves; pustules may be brownish and powdery
Obligate plant pathogen; heteroecious (requires alternate hosts), macrocyclic (has all typical rust life cycle stages: pycniospores, aeciospores, urediniospores, teliospores, basidiospores), primary hosts are cereals (wheat, rye) and some grasses
Edibility inapplicable
Sorus size: pustules generally small—visible on leaves
Germination of urediniospores requires free moisture
Spores: Different spore types:
Aeciospores: 21-26 × 17-22 µm, broadly ellipsoid to spherical, hyaline.
Urediniospores: 24-32 × 20-25 µm, yellow to cinnamon-brown, often finely echinulate (spiny) walls.
Teliospores: Two-celled, long clavate when mature, 40-58 × 17-25 µm, brown.
Rust fungus infecting cereals and grasses (especially wheat, rye), causing brownish pustules on leaves and serious disease
