Russula fragilis exhibits a relatively high level of spore ornamentation, featuring warts that are isolated or only infrequently connected by lines. The gills of this species contain predominantly 4-spored basidia, contributing to its overall spore density. Additionally, it possesses intracellular pigments, which result in its vivid cap colors. This species is noted for its sensitivity to environmental conditions, particularly soil pH, favoring more acidic substrates. It is subject to parasitization by the fungus Hypomyces lactifluorum, which transforms it into the "Lobster Mushroom." Studies have shown that Russula fragilis has a high degree of mycorrhizal specificity, most commonly forming associations with members of the Pinaceae family.
