Thin white powdery patches on living maple leaves, often predominantly on the underside; colonies may become extensive, with minute dark brown to black chasmothecia appearing at maturity
Spore mass white from conidia; mature chasmothecia dark brown to black
Obligate biotrophic parasite on living leaves of maples (Acer spp.), including field, Norway, sycamore and other maples; white colonies may occur alone or merge across leaf surfaces; summer to autumn
Inedible
Fruit body microscopic; powdery colonies may cover large areas of infected leaves
Chasmothecia ∅ ~150–180(–200) µm
No true flesh; composed of superficial white septate mycelium on host tissues
No macroscopic reagents reaction
Indistinct
Macroconidia cylindrical-ellipsoid, hyaline, ~25–35 × 13–18 µm, with fibrosin bodies; microconidia ~12–18 × 5–12 µm; chasmothecial appendages hyaline, repeatedly dichotomously or occasionally trichotomously branched with curved to coiled tips; asci 6–12, 8-spored; ascospores hyaline, ~23–27 × 12.5–14 µm
