Mushroom recognized by its distinctive cap with a variegated pattern of reddish-brown and yellow hues. Like other members of the Suillus genus, it has tubes instead of gills under the cap, which help to identify it as a bolete. It forms mutualistic relationships with pine trees, helping the tree to absorb nutrients while the mushroom benefits from the tree's photosynthesis products. Although it is edible, the cap's skin should be removed before cooking, as it can cause indigestion in some people.
